Blue Valley Telephone Company was incorporated on May 23, 1956. We purchased the following companies on May 21, 1960: Centralia Telephone Company, Home Telephone Company, Oketo Mutual Telephone Company, Summerfield Mutual Telephone Company, Vermillion Telephone and Force Telephone Exchange (Wheaton). On December 21, 1961 the Axtell Telephone Company and Vliets Mutual Telephone Company were added. Eight companies were consolidated into seven exchanges and were provided with dial telephone service.
In 1970, we acquired Farmers Mutual Telephone Company of Beattie and converted it to a single party service in town and 2 party in the rural areas. Palmer Telephone Company was purchased in 1974 and converted to single party service and buried lines. On April 10, 1978 a sales agreement was signed that allowed the acquisition of the Linn Rural Telephone Company. On August 14, 1980 the Linn Exchange was converted to buried single party service and became our 10th exchange.
At the Annual Meeting on April 24, 2001, the patrons of Blue Valley Telephone voted to change the name of the company to reflect our more diverse service offerings. The new name of the 45-year-old patron owned company would be Blue Valley Tele-Communications, Inc. (BVTC)
In 2002 BVTC began offering wireless high speed internet in the town of Marysville. We have now expanded this popular service to include the towns of Bremen, Hanover, Barnes, Waterville, Blue Rapids and Frankfort.
In February 2005, we acquired the Onaga exchange, followed by the Westmoreland exchange in March of that same year. BVTC has made history by putting Fiber to the Home in these two exchanges, both to the city subscribers and rural subscribers. At present we are in the process of upgrading our existing exchanges of Axtell and Beattie to the FTTH service, and we will continue until all exchanges are running on this most up to date technology.
Shortly after the acquisition of Onaga and Westmoreland, BVTC started offering Internet Protocol Television services over their existing DSL services, branded BVtv. This service has become very popular and is now in the homes of approximately 40% of our telephone customers.
Early in 2007 the cable television properties in the towns of Summerfield, Axtell, Vermillion, Onaga, Beattie and Frankfort were purchased. This allowed us to provide high speed internet to the Frankfort city customers through the cable.
Blue Valley Tele-Communications is proud of being a successful cooperative and continues to be a leader in the telecommunications industry.
